Salvator Rosa (Naples, 1615 – Rome, 1673), one of the greatest exponents of the Neapolitan Baroque, was a painter, engraver and poet. “Extravagant genius”, a polemical, uncomfortable and counter-current character, was appreciated as a painter of landscapes of wild beauty and battles and thanks to the circulation of his prints and his famous “Satires” in triplets, he had considerable success in Germany and England. Eclectic artist and precursor teacher of that dimension that characterized the pre-romantic cultural climate, he spent his life between his native Naples, Rome and Florence and many artists were inspired by his painting. His strong critical spirit, his freedom of thought and his art, in contrast with the conformism of his time, fueled the myth of Salvator Rosa, an artist who is still very modern today.
400 years after his birth, he is celebrated with this exhibition which sees the works of some of the most important contemporary engravers alongside eleven of his large-format engravings: Rodolfo Ceccotti, Jakob Demus, Paolo Ciampini, Roberto Stelluti, Èrik Desmaziéres, Livio Ceschin, Claudio Olivotto, Toni Pecoraro, Mario Scarpati, Patrizio Di Sciullo, Franco Anichini, Lanfranco Quadrio, Agostino Arrivabene, Safet Zec, Giorgio Roggino, Andreina Bertelli and Vincenzo Gatti. Many of the contemporary engravings are part of the Il Bisonte Foundation collection, while others have been kindly loaned by the authors themselves.
